Special Education

Ms. Birnbaum
Ms. Birnbaum has been at Marie Curie for three years. Prior to MCHS, she was at Hillcrest High School in Queens. Ms. Birnbaum teaches primarily in the Math and ELA Departments, and focuses on including varied strategies for student learning and achievement. Before becoming a teacher, Ms. Birnbaum worked in Juvenile Probation, the insurance and investments industry, and was a bookseller at Barnes and Noble bookstores. Ms. B co-leads the Gay Straight Alliance at MCHS. Outside of school, Ms. B enjoys dancing, music festivals, and visiting friends in Minnesota, where she lived for many years.

Mr. Dane
Prior to working at Marie Curie, Mr. Dane worked as an Assistant and Interim Residence Hall Director at Hofstra University. During this time, he earned a BA in Social Studies Education and an MSED in Special Education. This year, Mr. Dane will be working on the Relay For Life event and is the administrator for the school website and e-mail accounts. In his free time, Mr. Dane serves as the New York City & Nassau County Area Lead for the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life.

Ms. Fuentes
Teacher of Speech Language Improvement
Ms. Fuentes is a Licensed Speech Language Pathologist and holds a Certificate of Clinical Competency from The American Speech Hearing Association. She is also a licensed Teacher of Students with Speech Language Difficulties and has been at Marie Curie High School since 2012. Ms. Fuentes received a Masters of Arts in Speech Language Pathology from Lehman College and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from The Acting Conservatory at The School of The Arts at S.U.N.Y. Purchase. Her first love is the theater which she incorporates into her treatment strategies for adolescents with speech language impairments as much as she can. Ms. Fuentes loves working in a school environment where each day is both a challenging yet rewarding experience. When not at Marie Curie, she enjoys entertaining friends and family and spending as much time as possible with her husband and two children.
9th, 10th 11th grade English Language Arts - Prior to working at Marie Curie, Mr. McCormick worked for the YWCA and was a college student. He received an A.S. in Science from Bergen Community College, a B.A. in History from Montclair State University and an M.S. Ed from St. John’s University. Mr. McCormick has been teaching ELA at Marie Curie since 2013 and is the teacher coach of the Mock Trial Team. When he is not in the classroom, he enjoys reading and attending concerts.

Ms. Mockler
Ms.Mockler attended Muhlenberg College but she is always known that she wanted to teach. In her journey to becoming a teacher, she has studied abroad in Ireland where she has multiple family members. After working as a lifeguard for 6 years and a teacher's assistant, she began teaching for the first time. She chose MCHS as her first school. In order to enjoy her summer, Ms. Mockler goes on vacation and goes to grad school as well. This dog-owner enjoys exercising and kickboxing in her free time. She is an adventurous person that has been skydiving and caving. Her family originally comes from Ireland and Germany and currently resides in Long Island.
